Magazine Cover Review

Just like the movies, I have never considered how much detail goes into the production of a magazine. It is quite interesting. However, I noticed that all the magazines that we went over in class all share similar patterns and strategy, as they are all attempting to make a successful magazine.

I noticed that one of the most important part of the magazine is the cover. In every magazine that we went over in class had things on the cover that really stand out. For example, magazines like “The Opra Magazine and “Rolling stone” both have celebrities on the front of their magazine. I think that it is a brilliant idea to have a celebrity on the front of your magazine because it is so eye catching and makes audiences want to read the article because someone that they can admire is on the front of it. Another way to attract readers through the cover is feature articles. In the magazine, “Vogue,” all the feature articles are about fashion. That is a very effective use of a feature article because they are attracting the audience through advertising. This is because the audience of wealthy women who care about how they look, and what better then to advertise expensive fashion brands! A lot of the magazine’s features are advertising and that is staying loyal to the brands. These magazines seem to advertise certain brands and advertise them often. I want to point out the Sports Illustrated magazine. This magazine is a great example of how magazines are pointed toward a specific gender. The whole magazine is full of pretty women. You could see that this magazine was for the male audience.

There is a big issue going on in the magazine industry. That issue is how long articles in the magazine should be. In the article “Chances are you won't bother to read this article. It is just one long block of text, after all, unbroken by alluring pictures, snappy captions, or eye-grabbing infographics. You can't click it. You can't flip it. All you can do is read it. (Does Size Matter?)" it states how the percentage of the people under thirty-five, who read on a weekly basis, has gone down drastically. This suggest to magazine publishers that they should be aware of how much their audience is going to read the article. Therefore, the article could be pointed at publishers. It is hinting that publishers should consider shortening their articles to attract the younger audience. This explanation is also backed up in the same article because the article shows that the attention span in the younger generations are much lower than those of older generations. The article claims that this is because all the social media and media entertainment is going on today.
